Evacuations expand along Echo Trail and Fernberg Corridor as fires explode near Ely

Extreme fire conditions on July 13–14 fueled rapid wildfire growth in the Superior National Forest, forcing evacuations near Ely. The Camp Fire reignited and spread about 4.5 miles in half a day, prompting the evacuation of the Fernberg Corridor, while the Sioux Fire led to the evacuation of most of the Echo Trail between Crane Lake and Ely.

The St. Louis County Board of Commissioners issued a disaster declaration, and a temporary evacuation point was established at the Babbitt Municipal Building. Officials believe most of the fires were sparked by a dry lightning storm.
